Through genetic manipulation of samples from cybernetically and genetically enhanced subjects, called Pilots, HPK Logistical was able to create biological data systems for the control of their weapons frames. These supervisor systems, dubbed Head Units, were superior to artificial devices, being that they used human brains for the control and maintenance of all the frame's systems, and were, thus, immune to the hacking schemes employed by enemy Tactical Data Infiltrators (TDI's).

The widespread use of wireless communication by combat units created a strategic niche for TDI's. TDI's have been blamed for last week’s diversion of five unmanned transport vehicles operating in the Kosovo theater into enemy territories where they were looted by guerrilla forces. Post-Mortem investigation has revealed that the GPS units of the transports had been re-calibrated, leading the vehicles astray. Incidents such as these have necessitated non-human units that would not need wireless contact to achieve their mission objectives.

HPK Logistics was the first to market with their new system. The patent for their technique of enhancing Pilots, and then further manipulating their clones for Head Units was put them at the forefront of the market, due to the outstanding performance of their product.

However, rumors have surfaced regarding the stability of the Head Units. Combat Frames have allegedly responded to such highly personal information as their Pilot's personal pet names or social security numbers. HPK have denied these rumors, claiming that all units have no memories from their Pilots, and that memories could not have been retained in the brains created by the cloning process. Memory is a function of living brain matter, their public relations department has said, and cannot be carried in genetic information, although scientific evidence points to the contrary. Various religious and spiritual groups have weighed in with various theories regarding the possibility of souls in cloned human beings, but such discussions are beyond the scope of this memo.

Nevertheless, it has been observed that certain Combat Frames have particular "habits" that distinguish them from other Frames in their Unit, and, likewise, "habits" that they share with dissimilar Frames with Head Units from a common Pilot. These habits may include left-hand dominance, tapping of a foot during tension, or a favored manuver in combat. These habits have not been observed to be detremental to the performance of the unit, or disruptive to other units, but caution and awareness is advised. Investigation into this matter continues, and new developments will be reported.
